Why visit the Kashmir Valley?

A high green valley ringed by the Himalaya

The Kashmir Valley is an oval basin roughly 135 km long, cradled between the Pir Panjal and the Great Himalayan ranges at around 1,600 m. The Jhelum river winds through it past Srinagar, its lakes and its famous gardens — the landscape that Mughal emperors called paradise on earth.

Today it is one of India’s favourite holiday regions: a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, a shikara ride at sunset, wazwan feasts and kahwa, the Tulip Garden in April, the meadows of Gulmarg and Pahalgam in summer, golden chinars in autumn and snow and skiing in winter. This guide shows you how to see it well, season by season.

Visiting the Kashmir Valley: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kashmir Valley worth visiting?

Yes. Few places combine lakes, gardens, Himalayan meadows, glaciers and a living craft and food culture so compactly. A week lets you see Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg without rushing. You can compare the best tours here.

Is it safe to travel to Kashmir?

Millions of domestic and international tourists visit every year, and the main tourist areas are heavily policed. However, the region has a history of conflict, security incidents do occur and access to some places can change at short notice. Check your government’s current travel advice (some countries advise against travel to parts or all of Jammu & Kashmir), make sure your insurance covers you, and follow local instructions.

How do I get to the Kashmir Valley?

Most visitors fly into Srinagar, which has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities. The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla rail link now connects the valley to the national network via Katra, and the Jammu–Srinagar highway (NH44) is the main road route. See our how to reach Kashmir guide.

When is the best time to visit Kashmir?

April–June for tulips, blossom and green meadows; July–August for high meadows and treks (and the Amarnath Yatra crowds); late September–November for clear skies and golden chinars; December–February for snow and skiing in Gulmarg. See the month-by-month guide.

Will my mobile phone work in Kashmir?

Postpaid connections from anywhere in India generally work, but prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu & Kashmir usually do not work there. Visitors with prepaid SIMs typically buy a local connection (with ID and verification) or rely on hotel Wi-Fi. International roaming works on some networks — check with your provider.
